Guy Fawkes Day - 5th of November

Yesterday was Guy Fawkes Day, which has been celebrated every Nov. 5 in Great Britain.

Guy Fawkes was part of a group of men who wanted to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London but he was caught red-handed with the explosives!
Guy Fawkes wasn't even the ringleader, but has become the one we remember most.
All this happened in 1605, more than 400 years ago, and nowadays we call the story the Gunpowder Plot.
After Guy Fawkes was captured he was imprisoned in the Tower of London where many people think he was tortured during his questioning.
Guy Fawkes and many of his fellow plotters were executed.

Nowadays, people celebrate Guy Fawkes Day by lighting fireworks and bonfires. But yesterday, inspired on the film V for Vendetta , about a masked rebel named V who fights a fascist future British government,
several hundred protesters wearing masks gathered outside the British Parliament to mark Guy Fawkes night.

Learn more about Guy Fawkes Day and Anonymous in this article and this other.

Describing a person

We had a look at some useful words in class, which we're going to practise with now.

TYPES OF PHRASAL VERBS

Separable
When phrasal verbs are transitive (that is, they have a direct object), we can usually separate the two parts. For example, "look up" is a separable phrasal verb. We can say: "look up the word" or "look the word up".
However, if the direct object is a pronoun, we have no choice. We must separate the phrasal verb and insert the pronoun between the two parts:
Look up the word.
Look the word up.
Look it up. (It's incorrect to say: Look up it).

Inseparable:
However, if phrasal verbs are intransitive (that is, they don't have a direct object), we can't separate them.
Ex: I want my marks to go up.

Sometimes it's not easy to know whether they are separable or inseparable. If you are not sure, use a noun (or noun phrase) and don't separate the phrasal verb. You'll be always right that way! ;)

Here you have a website where you can look up the definition of the phrasal verbs, as well as the type (separable or inseparable)

PHRASAL VERBS

What is a phrasal verb??

It's the combination of a verb + a particle (preposition or adverb) resulting in a new word.
The meaning of that new word is different from the two separate ones.

Examples:

1. He'll work hard to pass the exams.
2. He'll work out what the manual says.

Have a look at this lesson online

In class we worked mostly with phrasal verbs with LOOK, why don't you do the following exercises to practise a little bit more??

You can leave a comment about the video, after watching it!

Excuse me. Excuse me. Sorry. Um, do you speak English? - No, I don't. Sorry. - Oh. My car's broken down, and I wondered if you could tell me where to find a garage. Well, you know, that's wasted on me. I don't understand what you're saying. - You don't speak English at all? - Not a word, no. It's one of those things, I wish I'd paid attention in school. Excuse me. Do you speak any English? - English? No. What's the problem? - I don't know, I can't understand her.
Hi. My car's broken down and I need to find a garage. No, I'm so sorry. I didn't understand that at all. All right. Well, thanks. That way, about half a mile, there's a village. There might be somebody who speaks English. (Speaking German) - I'm sorry we couldn't be more help. - Sorry about that. Next time you're over, maybe we'll have learnt English for you. Thanks anyway. - I can speak English. - So can I.

Groundhog Day - Movie Trailer

There is a movie based on that day, on which a weatherman finds himself living the same day (groundhog day) over and over again. Have you seen it?
I've posted the trailer so that you can see it:

Groundhog Day

On February 2, Groundhog Day is celebrated in the USA and Canada. Read about Groundhog Day and answer the questions.

Vocabulary
to hibernate (verb)- to sleep through the winter
hibernation (noun)- comes from hibernate (long sleep through the winter)
legend- old story that is told from parents to children, and children's children, and so on for many many years
shadow- darkness made where the light can't go through (when the sun shines you can see the dark outline of your body on the ground)

Story
A groundhog is a small animal that digs and lives under the ground. It is also called the woodchuck. Grounhogs live in many parts of America. In the winter they hibernate like bears and some other animals.
There is a legend that says a few hundred years ago Europeans brought Ground Hog Day to America. They said that the groundhog wakes up from his hibernation on February 2. (February 2 is half way between winter and spring.) If he comes up from his hole and it is sunny, he will see his shadow and be frightened. If he sees his shadow, there will be 6 more weeks of winter weather. But if he comes up and the sky is cloudy, he will not see his shadow and will not be frightened. Then spring weather will come very soon.
Some people believe this legend and they watch the sky on February 2. Many people are happy if it is cloudy on that day. They think spring will come soon. But most people think it is just a fun legend. What do you think?

Questions:

1. What is another name for groundhog?
2. Where do groundhogs live?
3. What does a groundhog do during the winter?
4. When does the groundhog wake up from his hibernation?
5. If a groundhog sees his shadow, what will happen?
