Guns N' Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine

Today is Axl Rose's birthday. He is the lead vocalist and only remaining original member of the hard rock band Guns N' Roses. This band had great success on the late 80s and early 90s, leaving hits such as Sweet Child o' Mine or Welcome to the Jungle.

In 1991, the problems began inside the band and the band played its final show on July 17, 1993, in Buenos Aires. The problems continued till 1999, the band never officially broke up, although it did not tour or perform for several years and no new material was released.
In January 2011, Axl Rose resurfaced with a new line-up of Guns N' Roses.

You can learn more about him or the band here.

CHECK YOUR PROGRESS- UNIT 6

Here you have the answer key to the Check your Progress section in Unit 6.

Rosa Parks - Civil Rights Pioneer

Born on Feb. 4, yesterday would have been Rosa Parks’ 100th birthday. On December 1st, 1955, when she was 42 years old, she refused to give up her seat to a white man on a city bus in Montgomery, Alabama. She was arrested, convicted of violating the state’s segregation laws. On that day, Rosa Parks initiated a new era in the American quest for freedom and equality.

"At the time I was arrested, I had no idea it would turn into this. It was just a day like any other day. The only thing that made it significant was that the masses of the people joined in." - Rosa Parks.

At an early age, Rosa Parks faced injustice wherever she went and decided that by taking action she could change the world around her.

If you want to learn more about h and what happened that day on that bus or what she started by refusing to give up her seat, you can click on this link, or this other one.

Writing a narrative

Next day, we will learn how to write a narrative. So, here you have the steps to follow when writing one. Have a look at them and if you have questions, don't worry, cause we will comment on it in class.

STEPS:

1. Make a list of everything that happened. Decide which information is important and relevant to your story.

2. Organise your ideas:
- First paragraph (opening): sets the scene of the story and introduces the characters
- Second and third paragraphs (body): gives details of the story
- Fourth paragraph (closing): ending of the story and its consequences

3. Use adjectives/ manner and degree adverbs to make your story more interesting.

4. Use appropriate verbal tenses.

5. Check your work for mistakes.

Order Of Adjectives

As  I told you, in order to make our essays more interesting and richer, we use a number of adjectives and adverbs. When we want to use more than one adjective to describe a noun, we must follow an specific order.

So instead of just saying: "I want to buy a fast car"., we could say: "I want to buy a fast, beautiful, big, brand-new, black and red, French car."

However, we don't normally use that many adjectives to describe a noun, because it would be excessive. Use just two or three!! and keep the order!!

Remember! we write commas in between the adjectives, but NOT in between the adjective and the noun. Should we use two adjectives from the same column, we write "and" in between, as in "black and red".

Here you can have a look at this order and some examples and then do some exercises: Order of adjectives

Natural Disasters

Hurricane Sandy- US

As we are now talking about natural disasters and survivals, I suggest you have a look at the website of National Geographic, which is very interesting.
"Learn how rock, wind, ice, snow, raging storms, and Earth's inner fire have transformed the planet and life on it. Watch video from inside a tornado, create your own hurricane, and see photos of tsunami devastation."
Here is the link

Relative Clauses

Before the Christmas holidays we worked on relative clauses in class. Here you have an explanation in order to refresh your memory.
